No matter how daunting it may seem, college should still be a great experience for you. The piece that follows offers great advice for navigating the college years and succeeding. Put together this advice with that you have received from family members, friends, teachers to come up with your best college plan.
Always have a bottle of water with you at school. You have to remain hydrated to ensure your brain and body are functioning properly. This is particularly important if you’ve got numerous classes back to back. Proper hydration will help keep you on-task and focused throughout your day. You can even refill your bottle at a water fountain.
If you’re struggling with achieving success in academics, look for study skills courses at your college. Even students that did extremely well in high school may have a hard time adjusting to college expectations. Improving your study skills can enable you to succeed in your classes and reach all of your goals.
Look everywhere when looking for financial assistance. Many scholarships are for unique characteristics or may not be widely publicized. There are various state and federal grants that don’t require repayment.
Learn your class schedule and where the courses are held well before you actually start. Plan out the best strategy for navigating the campus, learning the amount of time it will take to get from class to class. Make note of the bathrooms and other places you will need to go.
Don’t buy books unless you’re sure that you will need them. You might not need all of the required textbooks. This is almost a certainty for any online classes you are taking. Many times, all you need to complete these classes is already online.
Speak with your professors daily to build strong relationships. Your professors can be a valuable professional asset. Ask questions and offer help when it is needed. Having a good relationship with your professors will mean better grades and opportunities, so do not forget their importance in your success.
Set time aside each day for studying. Even though you may find other things to do, make sure to find time to study. Give yourself a minimum of an hour to study daily. While you may think you don’t require studying one day, do it anyway. It will make studying a routine.
When at college, you cannot rely on your past high school achievements to get you through. College is nothing like high school. Even if you were a great athlete or a kid that got great grades, you probably won’t be around people who used to know you anyways. The harder you work, the more successful you’ll be.
While you are in college, look for an internship. Internships offer a chance to learn hands-on skills and can also provide a glimpse of what you accomplish after you graduate. You can even go back once done for a long-term position. You’ll find plenty of resources available from your college that can help you set up an internship, so take advantage of the opportunity!
Try not to rely on electives alone as a method of selecting a major. Get involved on campus. Try work-study positions and join clubs. You are always sure to find a broad array of activities taking place on campus. Aim to try something new at least once per week.
The night before major tests, review your class notes and read over the textbook material just before bedtime. You are more likely to retain the information if you are relaxed when you go over it. Your brain will fill in the gaps between the things you learned, so this makes things easier to understand when you wake up.
Get started early. By getting up early you can eat a healthy breakfast and spend some time at the gym before beginning your day.
Leaving for college your first time can intimidate and excite you. Don’t worry. Because you will be responsible for your own schedule, you need to make the time to study as much as needed and get to your classes. Keep in mind that you are at school to get an education and learn how to live independently.
If you have an internship, make sure you do as good as possible in this position, even if it has no relation to your major. Experience is always more important than education. With a work-study position done well, you can help pay for college and start building up your resume at the same time.
Create a group of friends that have similar habits and courses of study. By having people surrounding you that desire to succeed, the chances of you succeeding will be higher. This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun as a group! The most successful students are able to strike a balance.
Are you an athlete who wants to still play while in college? Talk to the college coach ahead of time. College coaches often are not aware of incoming students with athletic abilities, so you should make it known that you would like to play on the team. You may even receive an unexpected athletic scholarship.
Get to know a few people in your classes. It might be a little uncomfortable to walk up to a complete stranger, however it is worth the effort. Give them your number as this can expand your contacts and especially helpful if you miss a class. Also, you can gain another studying partner for exams in that class.
If you’re a parent who is returning to college, you might not be considering living on campus because you don’t think it is possible. That is not true. Most colleges offer family housing. Colleges and universities are coming to understand that it is not just new high school grads who are working toward degrees. Be sure to ask early about housing options for families, because it tends to fill up very fast.
Although it may be hard work, college is also fun. Stay focused, and you should come out on top in the end.
