College is more than just something after high school. This is the place where your horizons are broadened and you assume full responsibility for your future. You need to make sure you consider everything when planning, and you need to be completely prepared for the experience that awaits.
Create a list of items that you are going to need to bring along to college. Be certain you have everything you need so you don’t have to call for help from your parents on a regular basis. This is beneficial if you are traveling a long distance to your college.
At school, keep a water bottle close. You need to be hydrated all day. This is especially important if you have several classes back-to-back and don’t have time to eat. When you’re not thirsty, you can focus on your school work. A lot of water fountains out there allow for easy bottle refills as well.
Keep in mind that you should be eating healthy while in college. It is called the freshman 15 for good reason. Be sure to mind what you are eating. Avoid overdoing the fast foods that are the staple of many students. It may be convenient, but it will leave you feeling sluggish and unable to concentrate in your classes.
Get used to your schedule and know where to find your classrooms before the first class. Time yourself to get a feel for how quickly you’ll have to walk to get from class to class. If you have a map plan your route carefully!
Your environment may make a difference in whether or not your studying is successful. Dorm rooms tend to be too loud and busy for you to focus. Instead, seek out a quite location where you can avoid potential interruptions. Study areas in the libraries exist for this very reason. You may also want to consider purchasing noise-reducing headphones to help you study in peace.
Be aware of where you sit in your classroom. Show up to class on time for front row seats instead of slinking into the back. This will help you feel more connected with your professor, and you will be able to interact in a normal speaking voice.
Breakfast is critical on test days. Anything, be it a muffin or a bowl of cereal, will do. Your brain cannot function as well on an empty stomach and its growling will distract you from your exam. Eating a good breakfast will prevent you from feeling hungry, boost your energy levels and help you to maintain focus during your test.
You’ve probably heard of the phrase, “The Freshman 15.” If you don’t want this to happen to you, ensure you’re carefully monitoring the simple carbohydrates you’re eating. Do your best to reduce sweets and processed foods during meals. Instead, eat a diet that consists of whole foods, like fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Don’t eat too much protein, though, as that has its own health issues associated with it.
Your high school popularity won’t be important in college. Most of your new peers came from similar backgrounds and will not be impressed by your accolades from high school. Challenge yourself as much as you can and push your old boundaries.
Consider an internship while at college. You can get a chance to experience what you will be doing after college. You may even get an offer of a job from the company you intern with! Many schools offer internship programs, check to see if one is offered in your field of study.
Take different electives. This is a great way to find out what really sparks your interest. Starting early will give you the most time to experience everything that you possibly can.
Pack only the minimum things you require if living in a dorm. Dorms can be very cramped, and clutter takes a toll quickly. List the bare essentials and stay on track with your list so you don’t overbuy. Keep an eye out for anything that is compact or saves space.
Take co-op or work/study positions very seriously, regardless of how relevant they are to your major. Employers look at education, but value experience more. Good performance in a work-study position is a great way to fund your education while also building a strong resume.
Every once in awhile, take a break from your studies. There is such a thing as too much studying. Some people may not believe that someone can study excessively, but is true. It is okay to take breaks; you will learn more this way.
